A Pink Rose Painting with a Mysterious Background

Posted by Vincent Keeling on

"This is a new painting of a pink rose called "Into the Mystic". And yes, I am robbing that from a song title. I had a completely different name picked out yesterday, but it just sounded off this morning. Then I randomly stuck on some Van Morrison tunes while writing, and eureka!

As for the painting itself you'll see that I've temporarily abandoned my white roses and gone very pink with this one. I have to confess it was something of a challenge at the beginning endeavouring to mix up convincing shades of purple, pink and red and everything in between. Got there in the end though, and I think I captured the right balance of rosy softness and solidity.

There was also a lot of dithering on my part with what to do with the background. I had notions of garden sculptures and all sorts. However, once I launched into it, I soon found that with the right colours laid in, particularly those hazy blue-greens, it really didn’t need any more; I think it lends the painting an air of mystery, which in some deep place just felt right.
And with that air of "mystery" and those airy notes of Van Morrison this morning we landed on "Into the Mystic” and all was, at least momentarily, well with the world."
