James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano - Painting
James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano
"I've mixed feelings of having done a painting of Tony Soprano played by the late James Gandolfini. After all Tony is not a character we should like, and is at the least a sort of anti-hero with an extremely dark side. However, looked at in a different light, The Sopranos as a work of art is perhaps TV at its very finest, and James Gandolfini's performance an example of the craft of acting like few others. I think it was the Irish writer John Banville who used the phrase "Shakespearean" in describing his love of the show. And very hard to disagree with that."
